I don’t know about you, but in the last few years my inbox has been inundated with unwanted and impersonal e-mails that somehow miss my spam box. Sometimes it feels like I spend hours just clicking the delete button instead of working on something productive. Most of these emails lack creativity and excitement as they make an effort to invite me to buy this or try that, others explaining why they’re the best… you name it, my inbox has seen it.

“Andy is heading to the gym.” – “Monica is wondering hmmm…. white or wheat bread?” - “Chris is hoping the Yankees win tonight!” - “Joe is heading to his 20 year reunion.”

If you have been on Facebook for more than a few minutes you’ve probably seen that 80% of the posts are just like this. You also might have made that knee jerk decision that this Facebook stuff is just for kids and has no real use in my business, correct?

We’ve all seen ads like this with a strong call to action that drives new business. It’s what we have been told to do by advertisers and marketing companies forever. And we do it because it works! Amazing how it makes me feel good just by writing it… “Atta boy”! Isn’t that what we all strive for in life and business? Just to hear those two simple words makes all the difference in the world. They seem to somehow possess some kind of magic power that softens us from the inside out. They make all the hard work, late hours, and stress just melt away into nothingness.

They give us a feeling of appreciation and validation that lifts us. Those words of recognition touch our core and give us value as individuals and as business people.

I’m not driving all the way out there to bid on a little job! And if I do, I probably won’t get it anyway. I’ll waste my gas, waste my time, and if I do get lucky and get the job I’m sure it will be a huge headache…. Sound familiar?

I’m sure you’ll agree with me that getting new business in the door is the hardest thing we do as business owners. Then why is it, that after we have the business in hand, we take it for granted?
